Unlocking your potential in fencing requires more than just understanding plays, practicing cuts and thrusts and doing some footwork drills.
Harness the tools of world-class fencing & combat programs with education and conditioning training that supports excellence AND longevity.
My science-based 5-Pillar Fighter Framework is designed to help all levels of historical fencers improve their performance and training methodology.
I help busy HEMA fencers meet and exceed their training and fitness goals through self-guided, group, and private coaching programs.
If the historical masters had access to this knowledge, you bet they'd take advantage of it too.
You want to get fit
Historical fencing has helped you move more and make new friends. Now that you've gotten better you've realized your fitness is probably holding you back. Going to a gym to run on a treadmill like a rat on a wheel or lift weights with a bunch of dude-bros sounds intimidating or just plain boring. Maybe you want to work on your fitness or have weight-loss goals but aren't sure where to start.
Your fencing has plateaued
You enjoy competing regularly in HEMA or other historical fencing organizations and perhaps even have some awards to show for it. Despite showing up to most of your group's practices, however, you haven't really seen much improvement in your fencing or fitness in the last six months (or more). You need a concrete training plan and someone to help you accelerate out of your current slump.
You're all in to win
Hello Tier A / Top Tier B fencers, I'm looking at you. You love competing and results mean a lot to you. You've already accomplished some awesome fencing goals and probably work out regularly. You're ready to work with a conditioning coach to polish up your fitness, create a competition game plan and maintain consistent performance when it counts.
Pick Your Program
SUPPORTED BY SCIENCE
No viral Instagram fitness trends here. This also isn't your high school weight room workout routine. Our program uses the highest quality evidence available - which we share with you along the way.
YOUR GOALS, YOUR PROGRAM
We recognize we all fence for different reasons: to lose weight and get healthier, to have fun, to compete. Wherever you are on your sword and health journey, we can meet you there and accelerate your health and fencing to the next level.
EMERGE EDUCATED
We don't want you relying on us forever (although that'd be a great business model). Instead, we help you develop the tools you need to eventually build your own program and take care of your body for the long term.
FULL SPECTRUM TRAINING
Most programs you pay for at a gym or online offer fitness and nutrition coaching. You get some workouts and maybe a diet plan. We are an entirely different concept. Sprezzatura is full body human health and performance training - a head to toe look at how you train, compete, and recover. We cover competitive sports psychology, stress and resilience, recovery and training schedule design (and more), in addition to nutrition and fitness coaching.
SUPPORT YOUR SWORD HABIT
Your program is tailored not only to fit your current level of fitness, but when and how you train for fencing. Practice 2 days a week with your HEMA club? Great. Other sports too? No problem - it's your program so it should be fit around what you love to do (besides swords).
SAFE AND HEALTHY SPACE
There is no "average fencer". We acknowledge and support warriors who are obese or super skinny, female, neurodivergent, queer/bi/trans, dealing with complex chronic medical conditions, transitioning, or otherwise feel part of an underrepresented group in historical fencing and combat sports.
Hi! I am
Liz Scott, MD
I was an overweight, un-athletic kid who found a love of movement through hobbies like dance and historical fencing as a young adult.
In college and medical school as a competitive dancer I became increasingly interested in fitness and sports injuries. Although the latter led me to pursue training in sports medicine, the former became body dysmorphia and a career-ending series of injuries.
Healing my body and learning to care for it for the long term took time and perseverance. It has now become my mission to help others achieve athletic excellence in sport while teaching them to how to keep their bodies whole and healthy.
Being and staying at the top of your game isn't about being a certain height, having naturally quick reflexes, or using the latest equipment.
Professional athletes have a team of staff supporting them - skill coaches, body workers, athletic trainers, nutritionists, strength & conditioning coaches, and more. These people are responsible for helping the athlete maintain their mind and body so they can perform at their highest level when it counts.
A 15th century knight wasn't so different in this regard - as elite professional warriors they relied on the help of others to get in and out of their armor, prepare their horse, care for their equipment and keep them fed. In turn, they dedicated time away from the battlefield to train themselves to be ready for their job.
The famous Pietro Monte (1509) advocated running, rock throwing, horse vaulting and climbing in armor to prepare for combat.
Today we have the benefit of modern exercise science. We are able to use our understanding of human physiology and psychology to get the most out of both our training time and the ways we recover and regenerate our bodies to keep us enjoying our sport at a high level for as long as possible.
If you have big goals like being fit enough to fight or ride in armor, seeing more consistent placements in competition or even just avoiding yet another chronic overuse injury, consider working with a coach who can help you train, thrive, and transform.
"Those who practice an art only in a single manner will remain eternal beginners"
- Pietro Monte
WHO OUR PROGRAMS
ARE *NOT* FOR:
I want you to be happy with your decision to train with me, and I want a good match between coach and fencer philosophies.
Let's make it explicitly clear, I DO NOT want people who:
Have a Fixed Mindset
What you learned from your athletic trainer in high school was likely wrong. It's 2024 and our understanding of training, rest, and recovery has evolved. I'm looking for people with an open, flexible mindset ready to apply the lastest sports training knowlege to their fencing.
Don't Care About Improving
This program takes commitment and work on both your and my end. It's a partnership that means putting in some time to learn, train, and integrate new information. If you regularly miss your group's fencing practices to play D&D or debate sources on Discord, this may not be the program for you.
Want to Hoard Their Knowledge
My mission is to create historical fencers who understand the components of conditioning, have a framework for how to improve and maintain their bodies and can apply that knowledge as teachers and mentors to the next generation of fencers.
